Zurich Film Festival in Zurich
Zurich Film Festival grew from a modest 2005 debut-films program at the Plaza cinemas, drawing 8,000 visitors, into German-speaking Switzerland's most prominent film festival, with a record 140,000 visitors across 107 films at its 20th-anniversary edition in 2024. Its competitions are limited to directors' first, second or third features, while a separate Gala Premieres section has drawn major international stars to the festival's Green Carpet. Each edition runs into early October, closing with the Golden Eye award ceremony at the Zurich Opera House.
Zurich Film Festival started small: in October 2005, three young organizers, Karl Spoerri, Nadja Schildknecht and Antoine Monot Jr., ran a debut-focused program out of the Plaza cinemas and drew about 8,000 visitors, a modest beginning for what would become German-speaking Switzerland's most prominent film festival.
