The story

Neimen Song-Jiang Battle Array in Neimen

Neimen District in Kaohsiung is home to eighteen of its fifty-four traditional folk performance troupes practicing Song Jiang Battle Array, a martial-arts formation dance rooted in Fujianese immigrant tradition, earning the district recognition as the form's Taiwanese heartland; troupes perform choreographed weapon formations during temple pilgrimage season centered on Neimen's Zhaoji Temple.

Song Jiang Battle Array arrived in Taiwan with Fujianese settlers during the late Ming and early Qing periods, carrying a martial tradition whose exact origin remains debated among Taiwanese folklorists: some trace it to techniques from Shaolin-derived boxing, others to General Qi Jiguang's mandarin-duck combat formation developed to fight pirates along the Chinese coast, and still others to militia organizations formed for village self-defense in Fujian and later in Qing-era Tainan.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Song Jiang Battle Array formations trace to Ming-Qing era Fujian, arriving in Taiwan with settlers who adapted a martial self-defense tradition, possibly derived from Ming general Qi Jiguang's mandarin-duck battle formation, into a temple-procession performance art named for the Water Margin outlaw-hero Song Jiang

02

The mystery stays covered

Neimen's concentration of eighteen separate troupes, more than any other single district in Taiwan, has earned it the informal title hometown of Song Jiang Battle Array, and performers there maintain a distinctive local twist: dancers march in eighteen traditional formations, including the well-known bagua or eight-trigram array, wielding an assortment of period weapons while paying ritual respect to the group's patron deity, Marshal Tian Du, at the start and close of each performance
