The story

Taipei Film Festival in Taipei

The Taipei Film Festival, run by the Taipei City Government's Department of Cultural Affairs since its 1998 debut, screens around two hundred films from more than thirty countries each year and is the only Taiwanese festival offering both a New Talent Competition for international directors and a Taipei Awards competition for local filmmakers. With roughly one hundred thousand attendees annually, it ranks among the most influential film festivals in the Chinese-speaking world.

When the Taipei Film Festival held its first edition in 1998, screening films from 28 September to 5 October under the direction of the Taipei City Government's Department of Cultural Affairs, it entered a Taiwanese film festival landscape already home to the much older, awards-focused Golden Horse Film Festival.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Taipei Film Festival's dual competition structure sets it apart from Taiwan's other major film events: its New Talent Competition invites emerging directors from anywhere in the world to compete, while its Taipei Awards competition is reserved specifically for Taiwanese filmmakers, giving the festival a role in nurturing homegrown cinema alongside its international programming

02

The mystery stays covered

Currently chaired by acclaimed cinematographer Mark Lee Ping Bin, the festival earned a distinctive place in film history in 2020, when it became the first in-person film festival held anywhere in the world following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic
