Zuoying Wannian Folklore Festival in Zuoying
Since 2001, Kaohsiung's Zuoying District has held an autumn folklore festival centered on Lotus Pond and the ten temples ringing it, anchored by the tradition of Welcoming the Fire Lion, a bamboo-framed lion figure wrapped in firecrackers and paraded through the streets before being set alight in a fireworks finale said to carry participants' wishes skyward.
Zuoying's ten temples, arranged in a loose ring around the scenic Lotus Pond in what was once the walled seat of a Qing-dynasty county government, had each held their own separate religious calendars for generations before 2001, when the Kaohsiung city government's Civil Affairs Bureau encouraged the local district office and the temples to design a shared community festival.
