Bujora Sukuma Museum Festival in Bujora/Mwanza
The Sukuma Museum at Bujora, on the Lake Victoria shore east of Mwanza, is an ethnographic museum founded by Catholic missionaries in the 1950s that doubles as a stage for Sukuma dance-society traditions, most notably the competitive Bulabo performances of the Bagalu and Bagika groups.
On the eastern shore of Lake Victoria, a short drive from Mwanza through the village of Kisesa, the Sukuma Museum at Bujora occupies mission land that Catholic priests turned, from the 1950s onward, into a repository for a culture they feared was eroding under colonial and post-colonial change.
