The story

Marafiki Arts Festival in Dar es Salaam

Marafiki Festival is Dar es Salaam's leading live-music gathering, held each November at a downtown venue in Tanzania's largest city. Since its 2022 launch it has grown into one of East Africa's fastest-expanding festivals, pairing local Bongo Flava, taarab and Afrobeat acts with touring international artists across multiple stages, workshops and a dedicated electronic-music program called Zone12.

Marafiki Festival began in Dar es Salaam in 2022 as a modest live-music weekend and has since become one of the fastest-growing festivals on the East African circuit, adding new stages, a dedicated electronic-music program and cross-festival partnerships with each passing year.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets Marafiki apart from other Tanzanian gatherings is its dual identity: by day it runs as a family-friendly showcase of East African genres including Bongo Flava, taarab, singeli and Afrobeat, and by night its Zone12 stage turns into a dedicated house, techno, drum and bass and hardstyle program built for the region's growing electronic scene

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival mixes free public stages with ticketed areas, runs artist workshops so emerging Tanzanian musicians can train alongside touring headliners, and has expanded every year since its 2022 debut, adding a fifth edition that folded in the Haba na Haba dance festival in 2024

03

The city starts moving

Its downtown Dar es Salaam setting keeps it walkable and rooted in the city rather than an outlying resort
