The story

Tanzania Film Festival in Dar es Salaam

The Tanzania Film Festival and Awards (TaFFA) is the country's flagship film industry awards ceremony, launched in 2021 by the Tanzania Film Board (Bodi ya Filamu Tanzania). Held in Dar es Salaam, most recently at the Super Dome in Masaki, TaFFA drew over 400 submissions in its 2026 edition and gathers actors, directors and producers for a red-carpet awards night.

Every year, Dar es Salaam's film community puts on its best clothes for one of Tanzania's most closely watched cultural nights: the Tanzania Film Festival and Awards, known locally by its acronym TaFFA.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

TaFFA stands out as a state-backed showcase for Tanzania's growing film industry rather than an independent or purely commercial event, since it was launched by the government's own Tanzania Film Board to formalize recognition for local cinema

02

The mystery stays covered

What began, in the words of one local reviewer, as a modest ceremonial handshake for the industry has grown into a full-scale red-carpet production, complete with elaborate staging, professional lighting and sound at Dar es Salaam's Super Dome

03

The city starts moving

Government officials use the platform to push a deliberate message: that filmmaking is a serious profession capable of generating real income, not a hobby, and the more than 400 submissions in the most recent edition point to a rapidly expanding pool of Tanzanian actors, directors and producers competing for recognition
