The story

Tanga Heritage Festival in Tanga

The Tanga Urithi (Heritage) Festival is a three-day celebration held each December in Tanga on Tanzania's northern Swahili coast. Organized by the Tanga Regional Office with the youth initiative Tanga Yetu, it links coastal traditions, from khanga textiles to fishing customs, with youth employment and tourism. The 2024 edition ran from December 27 to 29 under the theme Heritage and Traditions are Opportunity.

Tanga sits on Tanzania's northern coast, a port city whose fortunes have risen and fallen with sisal, cloves and dhow trade for more than a century.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets the Tanga Urithi Festival apart is its explicit framing of heritage as an economic engine rather than pure nostalgia

02

The mystery stays covered

Each day carries a distinct focus: the Vibrance of Khanga celebrates the colorful patterned cloth central to Swahili women's dress and explores its industry potential, Alwatan Night immerses visitors in Swahili poetry, storytelling and coastal cuisine, and the Night of Fishermen honors Tanga's maritime livelihoods and sustainable fishing practices

03

The city starts moving

The festival is coordinated through the Tanga Yetu advocacy initiative and the GOYN youth employment network, deliberately connecting cultural pride to the so-called Orange Economy, in which art, heritage and tradition become sources of youth entrepreneurship, tourism investment and regional pride for Tanga
