The story

Bangkok Pride in Bangkok

Bangkok Pride is Thailand's flagship LGBTQ+ celebration, culminating each June in a parade down Silom Road. Organized by Naruemit Pride with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, it has grown from a revived 2022 march into a nationally attended political and cultural event drawing senior government figures and international press coverage.

For a long time, Thailand's reputation for tolerance existed alongside a surprisingly thin record of organized LGBTQ+ public life.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Thailand's earliest LGBT celebration was the 1999 'Bangkok Gay Festival' held over Halloween weekend, but the modern Bangkok Pride traces to 2022, when Naruemit Pride, founded by activist Ann 'Waaddao' Chumaporn, staged the country's first official pride parade since 2006 with the backing of Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival has since become a barometer of Thai politics: in 2023 opposition figures Pita Limjaroenrat and Paetongtarn Shinawatra joined the march, and in 2024 Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin became the first sitting Thai premier to participate

03

The city starts moving

Same-sex marriage was legalized in Thailand on 23 January 2025, and Naruemit Pride marked the milestone with a mass same-sex wedding at Siam Paragon
