Songkran is Thailand's traditional New Year festival, celebrated nationwide April 13 to 15, and Bangkok hosts some of its largest public celebrations. Streets around Khao San Road, Silom Road and the Ratchaprasong intersection turn into water-fight zones, while temples host water-pouring rituals over Buddha images and elders receive blessings in the quieter rod nam dam hua ceremony.

Songkran marks the traditional Thai New Year on the old lunar calendar, observed nationwide from April 13 to 15, and Bangkok's version of the festival has grown from a quiet home-and-temple observance into one of the most visited water festivals in Asia.
