Phanom Rung Historical Park Festival in Chaloem Phra Kiat

The Phanom Rung Historical Park Festival brings a light-and-sound reenactment to Thailand's most celebrated Khmer temple ruin, in Chaloem Phra Kiat district, Buriram province, timed around the annual astronomical alignment of sunlight through the temple's fifteen doorways at sunrise each April and September, a rare natural spectacle.

Phanom Rung sits on an extinct volcanic hill in Buriram province, a Khmer sanctuary built across the tenth to thirteenth centuries and originally dedicated to Shiva before later Buddhist use, and for most of the twentieth century its story was defined less by devotion than by loss.
