Inthakhin City Pillar Festival in Chiang Mai
Inthakhin City Pillar Festival centers on floral offerings made to Chiang Mai's city pillar at Wat Chedi Luang, a ritual reaching back to the city's founding under King Mangrai in 1296. Many attendees wear traditional clothing or Thai silk, and the temple stays open from 6am to midnight, following the Lanna lunar rhythm known as the Month 8 In, Month 9 Out tradition.
By early morning at Wat Chedi Luang, the air is already thick with incense and heat, and people drift through the temple grounds carrying flowers as if they are bringing the city itself back to its heart.
