Hat Yai Vegetarian Festival in Hat Yai
Hat Yai's Vegetarian Festival, also known as the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, is an annual Taoist observance held by the Chinese-Thai community in this southern Thailand hub city. Over nine to ten days each October, devotees abstain from meat and pungent vegetables while colorful processions move through the city.
Hat Yai grew over the twentieth century into one of southern Thailand's most important commercial cities, drawing significant Chinese-Thai settlement whose descendants continue to observe the Nine Emperor Gods Festival each year alongside Chinese communities across the region.
