Poi Sang Long Festival in Mae Hong Son

Poi Sang Long is the Shan (Tai Yai) novice ordination ceremony held in Mae Hong Son, where boys between seven and fourteen are dressed as princes and carried through town on relatives' shoulders for three days before being ordained as Buddhist novices in a ritual recreating the life of Prince Siddhartha before his renunciation.

Before he became the Buddha, the story goes, Siddhartha Gautama was a prince who lived in luxury within palace walls, shielded from suffering until curiosity carried him past the gates and toward renunciation.
