The Naga Fireball Festival in Nong Khai centers on bang fai phaya nak, glowing reddish orbs said to rise naturally from the Mekong River, most often reported on the night of Wan Ok Phansa in late October, and celebrated locally as evidence of a giant serpent believed to inhabit the river.
