Ayutthaya's Loy Krathong festival, staged as Maha Loi Krathong at Wat Phra Ram inside the UNESCO-listed Ayutthaya Historical Park, floats candlelit krathongs against the backdrop of a lotus pond and centuries-old temple ruins. Held in early November, it pairs the national Loy Krathong tradition with the setting of a former royal capital.

Ayutthaya served as the capital of the Siamese kingdom for over four hundred years before its fall in 1767, and the ruins that survive within what is now Ayutthaya Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, include Wat Phra Ram, a temple complex built shortly after the city's founding and ringed by a pond that has since become known for its lotus blooms.
