Surat Thani's largest annual festival combines Chak Phra, a procession of Buddha images pulled by land and water, with long-boat races on the Tapi River. Held at the end of Buddhist Lent, more than a hundred temples send decorated boats and floats in a single day of citywide merit-making, followed by competitive races with crews of up to fifty oarsmen.

Chak Phra is rooted in a Buddhist story describing the Buddha's descent from Tavatimsa heaven at the end of a rains retreat spent teaching there, an event marked across parts of Buddhist Southeast Asia by processions symbolically welcoming the Buddha's return to earth.
