The story

Tobago Carnival J'Ouvert in Scarborough/Tobago

Tobago Carnival J'Ouvert is the pre-dawn street opening of Tobago's own standalone Carnival, held in and around Scarborough since the festival's October 2021 launch. It mirrors Trinidad's mud-and-paint J'Ouvert format on a smaller, island-specific scale.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Tobago Carnival was created as a deliberately separate celebration from Trinidad's February Carnival, scheduled instead for October to draw visitors during Tobago's tourism shoulder season and give Tobagonians a home-grown Carnival without needing to travel to Trinidad

02

The mystery stays covered

Its J'Ouvert component follows the familiar mud, paint, oil, and powder format behind steelband and soca trucks, but takes place through Scarborough's smaller streets and waterfront rather than the much larger crowds of Port of Spain
