Emancipation Day Festival in Port of Spain

Emancipation Day, observed 1 August, is a Trinidad and Tobago national public holiday commemorating the 1834 abolition of slavery. Trinidad was reportedly the first former British territory to declare Emancipation Day a national holiday, and Port of Spain hosts an overnight vigil, processions and shows culminating near Queen's Park Savannah.

Slavery was formally abolished across the British Empire on 1 August 1834, though a period of forced apprenticeship delayed full freedom for several more years in most colonies.
