National Panorama is Trinidad and Tobago's premier steelband music competition, staged annually since 1963 around Carnival time. Steel orchestras rehearse for weeks in panyards nationwide before competing through preliminary and semifinal rounds, with the large-band final held at Queen's Park Savannah in Port of Spain.
The steelpan itself was born out of prohibition.
Each steelband arranges a chosen calypso or soca into an extended orchestral piece with original introductions and variations, performed by ensembles that can include well over a hundred players
Panorama was created by Carnival Development Committee chairman Ronald Jay Williams, who named the competition, and it has run almost every year since 1963, pausing only in 1979 amid a pan-tuners' dispute over recognition and again in 2021-2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic
