Trinidad and Tobago Carnival in Port of Spain/San Fernando/Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago Carnival is the twin-island nation's signature pre-Lenten festival, centered on Port of Spain with additional celebration in San Fernando and across Tobago, built around masquerade bands, calypso and soca music, and steelpan, the national instrument invented in Trinidad, culminating in the Parade of the Bands on Carnival Monday and Tuesday.

Trinidad and Tobago Carnival traces its roots to the pre-Lenten masquerade balls held by French Catholic planters who settled Trinidad in the late eighteenth century, festivities that excluded the enslaved African population from direct participation but that those same communities transformed after emancipation in 1838 into something entirely their own.
