Hosay Trinidad in St James/Cedros
Hosay is a ten-day Shia Muslim Indo-Caribbean commemoration of the Battle of Karbala, observed in Trinidad most prominently in St James, Port of Spain, and in the coastal village of Cedros, where colourful model mausoleums called tadjahs are built, paraded and finally carried into the sea.
Hosay commemorates one of the founding tragedies of Shia Islam: the death of Husayn ibn Ali, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE, an event mourned worldwide during the first ten days of Muharram as Ashura.
