The story

Chutney Soca Monarch in Trinidad

Chutney Soca Monarch is Trinidad and Tobago's premier Indo-Caribbean music competition, established for the 1995-96 Carnival season. It crowns the top performer in chutney soca, a genre fusing Indian folk chutney music with Trinidadian soca, in an annual production now costing over US$1 million to stage.

Chutney soca's story begins with one man working two traditions at once.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Chutney soca itself emerged from decades of musical crossover: Lord Shorty (born Garfield Blackman) pioneered the soca-chutney fusion from the 1960s through the 1980s, and the genre gained national attention when Black Stalin's Sundar Popo, a song about a veteran Indian singer, won the Calypso Monarch prize in 1995, the same year Trinidad designated 30 May as Indian Arrival Day

02

The mystery stays covered

The Chutney Soca Monarch Competition was established that same Carnival season and has become the largest and most important Indo-Caribbean concert event of its kind in the world, crowning champions including Sonny Mann, Rikki Jai, Heeralal Rampartap and Drupatee Ramgoonai and drawing both Indo- and Afro-Trinidadian performers and audiences onto the same Carnival stage
