The story

International Festival of Carthage in Carthage/Tunis

The International Festival of Carthage is Tunisia's flagship summer arts festival, staged each July and August in the ancient Roman amphitheatre at Carthage since 1964. Now widely regarded as Africa's oldest continuously running annual festival of its kind, it has hosted legends of Arab music, jazz, rock, and French chanson beneath the amphitheatre's restored stone tiers.

The International Festival of Carthage stages its summer concert season inside one of the most historically layered venues in North Africa: the Roman amphitheatre of Carthage, built in antiquity for theatrical performances, poetry readings, and philosophical debate, later vandalized in the fifth century, and left largely unused for well over a millennium before being restored to public use at the end of the nineteenth century.

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few festivals anywhere perform in a venue with the layered history of the Carthage Amphitheatre: built in Roman times for theatrical performances, poetry readings, and philosophical debate, vandalized in the fifth century, left dormant for centuries, and only returned to active use at the end of the nineteenth century before its 1964 renovation for the festival

02

The mystery stays covered

What began as a modest two-day jazz gathering organized by local intellectuals in the early 1960s was taken over by Tunisia's Ministry of Culture in 1964 and grew into the country's most prestigious cultural showcase, seating 7,500 spectators beneath open sky and drawing major names in Arab music, jazz, rock, and French chanson across six decades of continuous programming
