Djerba Jewish Pilgrimage Lag BaOmer in Djerba/El Ghriba
Each spring, on the Jewish festival of Lag BaOmer, the El Ghriba Synagogue in Djerba's Er Riadh village becomes the destination for one of North Africa's oldest continuous Jewish pilgrimages. Pilgrims from Tunisia, France, Israel, and beyond gather at a synagogue whose foundations are said by local tradition to date back over two millennia, joining processions, prayers, and communal meals that keep a much-reduced Tunisian Jewish community's traditions visibly alive.
On the Tunisian island of Djerba, in the village of Er Riadh, also called Hara Sghira, stands the El Ghriba Synagogue, one of the oldest Jewish houses of worship in Africa.
