The story

International Festival of Ksour and Sahara in Tataouine

The Festival International des Ksour Sahariens is an annual heritage festival held in Tataouine in far southern Tunisia, celebrating the region's ksour: fortified multi-story granary structures built by Berber tribes from stacked vaulted storage cells. Now in its fifth decade, it combines reenacted Bedouin and Berber daily life, folk parades, equestrian displays, craft fairs and guided visits to nearby ksour and Berber villages.

In the arid hills around Tataouine, in Tunisia's far south, communities built some of North Africa's most distinctive storage architecture: ksour, fortified structures made of stacked vaulted cells called ghorfas, rising as high as six stories, where Berber tribes once kept their grain, oil and valuables safe from raiders and the elements alike.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What makes this festival distinct is that its subject is architecture as much as performance: Tataouine's ksour are historic granaries, built from stacked vaulted cells called ghorfas up to six stories tall, that Berber tribes used to store grain and goods communally

02

The mystery stays covered

Reaching roughly its 41st edition by 2022, it stages reconstructed scenes of Bedouin and Berber daily life alongside a street carnival of folk singing, poetry and literary evenings, and equestrian sport demonstrations, drawing visitors from across Tunisia and neighboring Maghreb countries

03

The city starts moving

Organizers moved the festival's traditional March date to December in recent years, but the core purpose, using festival programming to keep guided access to Berber ksour and villages active, has stayed constant
