The story

Carthage Ceramic Arts Days in Tunis

Carthage Ceramic Arts Days, or Journees de la Ceramique d'Art de Carthage, launched its first edition August 31 to September 8, 2019 at the Cite de la Culture in Tunis. The inaugural event gathered around 60 ceramic artists from 20 countries for workshops, exhibitions, and a closing evening at the Roman amphitheater of Carthage.

Carthage's ancient identity was, in part, built on ceramics: Punic and Roman-era workshops on the site produced pottery, amphorae, and decorative ware that archaeologists still study today, and the ruins where those workshops once stood now sit alongside a modern Roman theatre and amphitheater still used for public events.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The confirmed first edition combined craft exhibitions with genuinely unusual programming: a concert at the Roman Theatre of Carthage performed on instruments made of ceramic, and a ceramic-themed fashion show, alongside scientific meetings and an international ceramic art prize worth 20,000 dinars awarded at the closing at the Roman amphitheater of Carthage

02

The mystery stays covered

Staging the event among Carthage's Roman ruins gave the craft a historical backdrop rarely available to contemporary ceramicists, tying a living regional craft tradition directly to ancient production sites
