The story

Carthage Contemporary Art Days in Tunis

Carthage Contemporary Art Days, or Journees d'Art Contemporain de Carthage, known by the acronym JACC, is a Ministry of Cultural Affairs initiative for visual and plastic arts based at the Cite de la Culture in Tunis. Since its first edition in September 2018, JACC has grown into a multi-country event, with its third edition in May 2023 featuring around 200 artists from 23 countries.

When the Journees d'Art Contemporain de Carthage opened its first edition at the Cite de la Culture in September 2018, it filled a gap that had long been visible in Tunisia's cultural calendar: while the Journees Cinematographiques de Carthage and the Journees Theatrales de Carthage had decades of history behind them, contemporary painting, sculpture, and installation work had no equivalent national platform of its own.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

JACC was created explicitly to give Tunisia's contemporary visual arts scene a dedicated national and international event, something painting, sculpture, and installation work had lacked compared to Tunisian cinema and theatre festivals

02

The mystery stays covered

Its third edition, themed l'art, un chemin or art as a path, invited Palestine and Argentina as guest countries of honor and brought together roughly 200 artists, 150 of them Tunisian, alongside about 60 exhibited artworks spread across multiple galleries rather than one central venue

03

The city starts moving

A stated priority on decentralization and support for young and regional artists distinguishes JACC from more established, capital-centric Tunisian art institutions, aiming to grow the domestic market for plastic arts rather than only showcase finished work
