The story

Dream City Tunis in Tunis

Dream City is a contemporary art biennial staged in the medina of Tunis, founded in 2007 by the association L'Art Rue. Every two years, dozens of Tunisian and international artists transform private houses, alleyways and public squares of the UNESCO-listed old city into temporary galleries and performance spaces, working for months beforehand with residents rather than simply installing work overnight.

The medina of Tunis is a working neighborhood before it is a monument: families still live behind the carved doors that line its alleyways, and its souks still sell to local shoppers as much as to tourists.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Dream City is not a concert series but a site-specific art biennial: its tenth edition in October 2025 presented 56 artworks by 56 artists from 22 countries, each piece created for a particular courtyard, rooftop or alleyway after long-term collaboration with the medina's residents

02

The mystery stays covered

That process, run by L'Art Rue, an association that has worked in the medina for roughly two decades, is what distinguishes it from a touring exhibition parachuted into a historic quarter

03

The city starts moving

The festival has also become a recognized platform for women artists working in performance, video and installation

04

The water draws everyone in

Because the medina itself is the venue, with no fixed stage or gallery, each edition reshapes how visitors move through streets many had only ever passed through, turning ordinary domestic architecture into an unpredictable art trail
