The story

Festival International Jean Rouch Tunis in Tunis

This is the Tunis 'Hors-les-murs' (off-site) satellite edition of the Paris-based Festival International Jean Rouch, an ethnographic and documentary film festival honoring French filmmaker Jean Rouch, organized in partnership with IRMC (Institut de Recherche sur le Maghreb Contemporain). Its first Tunis edition ran February 22-25, 2024, with a third edition held April 14-19, 2026 at Cinema Africa.

A full 260-400 word evergreen story is not written for this entry because the Tunis edition is only three editions old as of 2026, and a longer institutional narrative would overstate its history.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Unlike most entries in this dataset, this event is explicitly not an independent Tunisian festival but a branch extension of a long-running Paris institution, giving Tunis audiences access to ethnographic and social-science-oriented documentary cinema curated in coordination with the parent French festival

02

The mystery stays covered

Its 2026 edition opened with a screening of the landmark film La Bataille d'Alger and included roughly nine films plus a masterclass, reflecting a focus on North African and postcolonial documentary subjects rather than commercial cinema
