The story

Manarat Mediterranean Film Festival in Tunis/La Marsa

Manarat, the Festival du Cinema Mediterraneen, is a Tunis-area film festival founded in 2018 under the artistic direction of producer Dora Bouchoucha, run jointly by the National Center for Cinema and Image and the French Institute of Tunisia. Its signature feature is free open-air screenings on public beaches, including La Marsa, rather than conventional indoor cinemas.

In much of the Mediterranean, summer cinema has long meant something looser and more communal than a ticketed evening indoors, and Manarat, formally the Festival du Cinema Mediterraneen, built its identity around that idea when it launched in 2018.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Manarat's defining choice is geographic: instead of concentrating screenings in Tunis cinemas, the festival sets up free popular screenings directly on the sand at beaches including La Goulette, La Marsa, Hammam-Lif, Bizerte, and Hammamet, later expanding to Nabeul, Monastir, and Kerkennah, turning a night at the movies into a beach event accessible to people who might never attend a formal festival screening

02

The mystery stays covered

Under producer Dora Bouchoucha's artistic direction, the festival is built specifically to introduce Tunisian audiences to Mediterranean cinema beyond the more internationally focused Carthage Film Festival, and it runs a Post-Production Lab supporting films still in development, giving it a working role in the regional film industry beyond public screenings alone
