The story

Istanbul Biennial in Istanbul

The Istanbul Biennial is Turkey's leading international contemporary art exhibition, organized by IKSV since 1987 and staged every two years across the city's historic venues, making it one of the longest-running biennials in the world and a consistent barometer of how contemporary art engages Istanbul's politics and urban life.

When the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts staged the first Istanbul Biennial in 1987, contemporary art infrastructure in Turkey was thin: there was no biennial tradition, few dedicated contemporary galleries, and little precedent for showing international work alongside Turkish artists on equal footing.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The first edition in 1987, directed by Beral Madra under the title Contemporary Art in Traditional Spaces, set the template of installing roughly seventy artists' work inside historic buildings rather than a purpose-built pavilion system

02

The mystery stays covered

The 1995 edition, curated by Rene Block, is widely credited with giving the Biennial its first serious international visibility, and the 2005 edition curated by Charles Esche and Vasif Kortun pushed the exhibition to engage directly with Istanbul's everyday political life rather than treating the city as a scenic backdrop

03

The city starts moving

Nearly four decades on, it remains the event most associated with positioning Istanbul as a global contemporary art hub, alongside the concurrent Contemporary Istanbul art fair
