International Izmir Festival in Izmir

The International Izmir Festival is an arts festival organized since 1987 by the Izmir Foundation for Culture, Arts and Education, staging orchestral, opera and popular music performances each summer across venues in the city and at the ancient archaeological site of Ephesus, near the Aegean coast.

When the Izmir Foundation for Culture, Arts and Education first staged what it then called the Izmir International Culture and Arts Festival in 1987, the city was working to build a cultural identity that could stand apart from, rather than simply echo, Istanbul's much larger and older festival scene.
