The story

Seb-i Arus Mevlana Commemoration in Konya

Seb-i Arus is Konya's annual commemoration of the 13th-century Sufi mystic and poet Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, held December 7-17 each year and centered on December 17, the anniversary of his death, understood in Sufi tradition as his wedding night, union with the divine, drawing pilgrims and cultural travelers from across Turkey and abroad each winter.

Konya, once the capital of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum, is where the 13th-century poet and Sufi mystic Jalaluddin Rumi, known across Turkey simply as Mevlana, our master, spent much of his life, wrote his most influential poetry, and died on December 17, 1273.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Officially titled the International Commemoration Ceremonies of Vuslat, Seb-i Arus draws pilgrims, scholars, and travelers from around the world to Konya specifically because of how it reframes death: rather than mourning, the ceremony treats Rumi's passing as a wedding night, a spiritual union with the divine, expressed through the Sema, the whirling ceremony of the Mevlevi order (the Whirling Dervishes) founded on Rumi's teachings

02

The mystery stays covered

The ten-day ceremonial window, running to a formal ticketed Sema performance at the Konya Mevlana Cultural Center, gives the observance both a devotional and a major cultural-tourism dimension simultaneously
