Gospel Day Tuvalu in Nukulaelae/Nationwide
Gospel Day on Nukulaelae commemorates the arrival of Christianity in Tuvalu, traced to 1861 when a Samoan-trained pastor named Elekana, blown off course in a storm, drifted ashore on Nukulaelae and began teaching the faith that became the Ekalesia Kelisiano Tuvalu, the country's dominant church.
In 1861, a Cook Islander pastor-in-training named Elekana set out by canoe on what should have been a short coastal trip.
