Vaitupu Island Day in Vaitupu
Vaitupu Island Day, also called Te Aso Fiafia (Happy Day), is Tuvalu's largest atoll community celebrating the 25 November 1887 payoff of a debt that once threatened outsiders would seize the island. Held annually in the main village of Asau, the day mixes church thanksgiving, community feasting, sports contests and fatele singing and dance, marking a moment residents still describe as the atoll's deliverance.
On Vaitupu, the largest atoll in Tuvalu, one date matters more than any other on the community calendar: 25 November.
