The story

Vaitupu Island Day in Vaitupu

Vaitupu Island Day, also called Te Aso Fiafia (Happy Day), is Tuvalu's largest atoll community celebrating the 25 November 1887 payoff of a debt that once threatened outsiders would seize the island. Held annually in the main village of Asau, the day mixes church thanksgiving, community feasting, sports contests and fatele singing and dance, marking a moment residents still describe as the atoll's deliverance.

On Vaitupu, the largest atoll in Tuvalu, one date matters more than any other on the community calendar: 25 November.

The city starts moving

Villagers spent years gathering coconuts and processing copra to raise the $13,000 owed, finally clearing the debt on 25 November 1887 with help from neighboring Funafuti

04

The water draws everyone in

Rather than a colonial-imposed holiday, Te Aso Fiafia was chosen by Vaitupuans themselves to commemorate their own resourcefulness, making it one of the few Pacific commemorations built entirely around a community's economic self-rescue rather than a religious or political anniversary
