Nyege Nyege is East Africa's largest electronic and experimental music festival, held annually near Jinja, Uganda on the Nile River since 2015. Founded by Derek Debru and Arlen Dilsizian, the 2025 edition marked its tenth anniversary with 300-plus artists across six stages, having grown into one of the most internationally celebrated dance-music festivals on the continent.
Nyege Nyege began not as a festival but as a club night.
The festival's name comes from the Luganda phrase for an irresistible urge to dance, and it has earned recognition from outlets including Resident Advisor and FACT as one of the world's best electronic festivals, while Uganda's own tourism trade body named it best tourism event of the year in both 2018 and 2019
Its riverside venue has shifted almost every year, moving through Itanda Falls, the Jinja Golf Course near the Source of the Nile, and Kalagala Falls, giving each edition a distinct sense of place along the Nile
It has weathered real controversy too, including a 2018 attempt by religious and political figures to have it shut down over unfounded accusations, which was overruled by Uganda's interior minister
