The story

Kampala Art Biennale in Kampala

Kampala Art Biennale is Uganda's biennial of contemporary African art, founded in 2014 by artist, gallerist, and curator Daudi Karungi through the Kampala Arts Trust. Across four documented editions - Progressive Africa (2014), Seven Hills (2016), The Studio (2018), and Get Up Stand Up (2020) - it positioned Kampala as an East African hub for pan-African contemporary art conversation.

The Kampala Art Biennale began in August 2014, when artist, gallerist, and curator Daudi Karungi opened Progressive Africa, a survey exhibition of contemporary African painting, sculpture, photography, and installation staged across venues in Kampala.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What distinguishes the Kampala Art Biennale is its curatorial experimentation: the 2016 Seven Hills edition, curated by Elise Atangana, used Kampala's own topography as its organizing theme, while the 2018 Studio edition, developed by Cameroonian critic Simon Njami, replaced a conventional exhibition with a master-and-apprentice format, bringing seven internationally established African artists, including Abdoulaye Konate, Aida Muluneh, and Pascale Marthine Tayou, into ten-day studio residencies with young Ugandan and East African apprentices

02

The mystery stays covered

Founded and directed throughout by Daudi Karungi, who also runs Kampala's Afriart Gallery, the biennial operates on a comparatively small budget yet built a reputation for reframing what a biennial can be rather than following the national-pavilion survey model used at older African biennials like Dakar and Bamako
