The story

Meridian Czernowitz in Chernivtsi

Meridian Czernowitz is an international poetry festival held in early September in Chernivtsi, founded in 2010 to restore the city's place on Europe's literary map. It brings poets, musicians, and translators from Germany, Austria, Poland, Israel, and beyond for readings, discussions, and performances rooted in the city's multilingual literary heritage.

Meridian Czernowitz began as a project of the Chernivtsi regional civic organization Cultural Capital, focused on literary management with the explicit goal of returning Chernivtsi to Europe's cultural map.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival draws directly on Chernivtsi's Habsburg-era identity as a multilingual literary crossroads, home to German-language poets such as Paul Celan, and positions itself as an International Literary Corporation rather than a single event, encompassing a sister festival, Meridian Poltava, launched in 2018, a Paul Celan literature center, and ongoing book-publishing projects

02

The mystery stays covered

Its initiative group includes major figures of contemporary Ukrainian and diaspora letters, among them poet and Radio Liberty journalist Ihor Pomerantsev, novelist Yuri Andrukhovych, translator Petro Rykhlo, and poet and novelist Serhiy Zhadan
