Mykolaichuk OPEN is an international audience-cinema festival in Chernivtsi, founded in 2022 and named for Ukrainian actor, director, and writer Ivan Mykolaichuk, held annually each June around his birthday and notable as the first major Ukrainian film festival held offline after Russia's full-scale invasion began that same year.
Chernivtsi's Mykolaichuk OPEN film festival was born out of necessity and defiance in equal measure.
The festival was created in 2022, in wartime, at the initiative of producer Oleksiy Hladushevskyi and the Ivan Mykolaichuk Cultural and Arts Center, and it became the first major Ukrainian film festival to run offline, in person, after Russia's full-scale invasion began, a symbolic milestone for the country's cultural life
Its official award, the Iron Mykolaichuk, takes its design from Ivan Mykolaichuk's role in the 1972 Ukrainian film Propala Hramota (The Lost Letter), directed by Borys Ivchenko
