The story

Koliada na Maizliakh in Ivano-Frankivsk

Koliada na Maizliakh is an international Christmas festival founded in 2010 at the Basilian monastery of Christ the King in Ivano-Frankivsk, dedicated to reviving and sharing Ukrainian Christmas carols (koliady and shchedrivky) through performances by choirs and ensembles from across Ukraine and abroad, with more than 300 groups taking part over its history.

In 2010, at the monastery of Christ the King, home to the Basilian Fathers of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Ivano-Frankivsk, a new festival began with a narrow, specific mission: to restore, preserve, and spread koliady and shchedrivky, the traditional Ukrainian Christmas and New Year carols that had, in many communities, faded from regular practice.

The mystery stays covered

Its explicit mission is preserving, restoring, and spreading Ukrainian Christmas carolling traditions and enabling creative exchange between performing groups

03

The city starts moving

By 2018 it had hosted performers from across Ukraine, including Kyiv, Dnipro, Odesa, and Donetsk, Luhansk, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Volyn, Ternopil, and Lviv oblasts, as well as international ensembles from Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, and Poland, over 300 solo concert programs across its history
