Kharkiv City Day marks the founding of Ukraine's second-largest city in 1654 and has traditionally been observed in August with public celebrations. Kharkiv has been a major target of Russian attacks since 2022, with close to a quarter of the city reported damaged or destroyed by 2024, making any current City Day observance markedly different from its pre-war form.

Kharkiv was founded in 1654 as a Cossack fortress and grew over the following centuries into Ukraine's second-largest city, a major commercial, industrial, scientific, and cultural center that briefly served as the capital of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic from 1919 to 1934.
