The story

Hutsul Festival in Kosiv/Verkhovyna/Yaremche

The International Hutsul Festival is a folklore-ethnographic festival held annually since 1991 in a rotating host town of the Hutsul region, historically including Verkhovyna, Kosiv, and Yaremche in Ivano-Frankivsk oblast among many other towns across the wider Hutsul cultural area spanning three Carpathian oblasts of western Ukraine.

In 1991, as Ukraine moved toward independence, the town of Verkhovyna in Ivano-Frankivsk oblast hosted the first International Hutsul Festival, an ethnographic and folklore gathering built around the culture of the Hutsuls, the highlander people of the Carpathian region straddling what are now Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, and Zakarpattia oblasts.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's defining feature is its rotation: rather than a fixed venue, it moves each year to a different town across the historical Hutsulshchyna region spanning Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, and Zakarpattia oblasts, having been hosted by Verkhovyna (1991, 1994, 2001), Vyzhnytsia (1992), Rakhiv (1993, 1997), Putyla (1995), Yaremche (1996), Kosiv (1998, 2002), Nadvirna (1999), and Kolomyia (2000) in its first dozen editions alone

02

The mystery stays covered

This rotation spreads cultural and economic benefit across the whole Hutsul cultural region rather than concentrating it in one city, and it has run continuously since 1991, making it one of Ukraine's longest-established regional folk festivals
