International Book Arsenal Festival in Kyiv

The International Book Arsenal Festival is Ukraine's largest annual book fair, held at Kyiv's Mystetskyi Arsenal, a national art and culture museum complex built into a former 19th-century military arsenal. The festival draws tens of thousands of visitors to a single historic venue whose 60,000-square-meter exhibition halls make it one of the biggest cultural spaces in Europe, combining publisher stands with literary talks and public programming.

The festival's setting does much of the work: Mystetskyi Arsenal occupies a former imperial-era ammunition workshop with six-foot-thick walls, built in 1798 from a distinctive yellow Kyiv brick that earned it the nickname the porcelain Arsenal, and excavations before the museum's 2006 opening uncovered a monastery necropolis beneath the building dating to the 1540s, including the presumed grave of Hetman Ivan Mazepa's mother
