The story

KyivPride in Kyiv

KyivPride is Ukraine's LGBTQ rights march and festival, held in Kyiv since a small first parade in 2003 and now organized each June under heavy police protection due to a history of violent counter-protests. After Russia's 2022 invasion forced organizers to hold that year's march in Warsaw, KyivPride returned to Kyiv in 2024 and has continued since, drawing growing numbers of participants including foreign diplomats even as air-raid risk and anti-LGBTQ threats shape every logistical decision.

Kyiv held its first, small LGBTQ pride parade in September 2003, but the event spent much of the next decade being cancelled, banned, or driven underground rather than becoming an annual fixture.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

KyivPride's history reads as a barometer of both Ukrainian civil society and its security situation: the 2013 march was legally banned from central Kyiv and reduced to about 50 people marching under 1,500 police officers before scattering and changing clothes to avoid reprisal attacks, while by 2016 the renamed Equality March had grown to 1,500 participants protected by more than 5,500 police and 1,200 National Guard troops

02

The mystery stays covered

After the full-scale invasion made a 2022 march inside Ukraine impossible, organizers staged that edition in Warsaw jointly with Poland's own Equality Parade, combining LGBTQ rights messaging with calls to support Ukraine

03

The city starts moving

When the march returned to Kyiv in June 2024, organizers capped attendance at 500 and staged it beside a metro station for air-raid shelter access

What to wear

Practical, comfortable clothing suited to a short, tightly controlled march rather than a leisurely parade; closed-toe shoes given tight police cordons and the possibility of needing to move...

Safety

KyivPride is easier when valuables are secure and the group knows where to meet if separated.
