The story

Molodist Kyiv International Film Festival in Kyiv

Molodist is Kyiv's international film festival, running every October since 1970, when it began as a two-day showcase of 33 student films from the Kyiv State Institute of Theatrical Arts. It is Ukraine's only festival accredited by FIAPF and focuses on debut and student work, screening across venues including the Kyiv Cinema Cultural Center, Zhovten, and Kinopanorama, with past debuts by Tom Tykwer, Danny Boyle, and Francois Ozon.

Molodist began in 1970 as a two-day, self-organized festival of films shot by students at the Kyiv State Institute of Theatrical Arts, showing 33 movies in its first year.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Molodist has built its reputation as a launchpad: directors including Tom Tykwer, Danny Boyle, Francois Ozon, and Jacques Audiard screened early work here before becoming internationally known, and past participants have gone on to win the Cannes Palme d'Or and the Oscar

02

The mystery stays covered

Its FIAPF accreditation, held since the early 1990s, makes it the only Ukrainian festival on that list of competitive festivals

03

The city starts moving

In 2001 Molodist created the Sunny Bunny Award for LGBTQ-themed cinema, an unusually early move for the region, and that initiative eventually grew into its own standalone Sunny Bunny festival launched in January 2023, for which longtime festival president Andrii Khalpakhchi and colleague Bohdan Zhuk received a special Teddy Award at the Berlin International Film Festival
