The story

Odesa International Film Festival in Kyiv

The Odesa International Film Festival is Ukraine's leading film showcase, founded in 2010 and normally held each July in the Black Sea port city of Odesa. Built around International, National, and European Documentary competitions, it awards the Golden Duke prize and stages its signature red-carpet ceremonies at the historic Odesa Opera and Ballet Theatre. Since Russia's 2022 invasion, the festival has run in exile, moving screenings abroad and relocating its Ukraine-based edition inland to Chernivtsi.

The Odesa International Film Festival began in July 2010, when the first edition ran a competitive slate of sixteen feature films out of the Rodina cinema, drawing more than 40,000 spectators to a city whose relationship with cinema runs back to the Soviet-era Golden Duke festival of 1988.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Odesa's festival built its identity on the city's own cinematic heritage: its main prize, the Golden Duke, revives the name of a 1988 Soviet-era Odesa festival award, and its closing galas take place beneath the chandeliers of the Odesa Opera and Ballet Theatre, one of Ukraine's most storied buildings

02

The mystery stays covered

Honorary Golden Dukes have gone to Isabelle Huppert, Agnieszka Holland, Mike Leigh, and Catherine Deneuve, giving a Black Sea festival an outsized reputation among European industry figures

03

The city starts moving

Since the invasion, its distinction has become survival itself: 2022 screenings split between Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic and Prishtina Film Fest in Kosovo, and the 2023 Ukrainian edition moved inland to Chernivtsi, away from the coast and its shelling risk
