The story

Odesa International Literature Festival in Odesa

The International Literature Festival Odesa was founded in 2015, conceived by writer Andrey Kurkov together with cultural managers Hans Ruprecht of Bern and Ulrich Schreiber of Berlin, normally hosted at the Odesa Literature Museum. Since Russia's 2022 invasion, it has been relocated abroad, running in Batumi, Georgia and later in Krakow, Poland rather than physically in Odesa.

The International Literature Festival Odesa began as an idea in 2013, when Ukrainian novelist Andrey Kurkov, one of the country's most internationally recognized authors, teamed up with Hans Ruprecht, a cultural manager based in Bern, and Ulrich Schreiber, a festival organizer from Berlin, to build a literary event that would connect Odesa's writers and readers directly with an international circuit of authors and ideas.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival was built from the start as an East-West literary bridge, pairing Ukrainian writers with international counterparts, an idea first developed in 2013 by Andrey Kurkov, one of Ukraine's best-known contemporary novelists, alongside experienced European festival organizers

02

The mystery stays covered

Its forced relocation since 2022 has not ended the festival but transformed it into a mobile, diaspora-facing event, held in Batumi in 2022 and subsequently in Krakow, keeping Odesa-connected literary programming alive even while the city itself remains too close to active war conditions for the physical event to return
