Intermezzo Short Story Festival in Vinnytsia

Intermezzo is Ukraine's only dedicated short-story festival, held annually in Vinnytsia in late May since its founding in 2015, organized by independent cultural managers including Iryna Vikyrchak and named after a novella by Ukrainian writer Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky, a native of the Vinnytsia region, whose short fiction shaped the festival's founding idea.

In 2015, in Vinnytsia, independent Ukrainian cultural managers, including Iryna Vikyrchak, working with the NGO Institute of Cultural Management, launched a festival built around a literary form that, remarkably, had no dedicated festival of its own anywhere else in Ukraine: the short story.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival is Ukraine's only festival dedicated specifically to the short story form, and it is built directly around the literary legacy of Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky, a major Ukrainian writer and public figure whose short fiction, particularly his own story titled Intermezzo, is considered a landmark work integrating Ukrainian culture into European literary modernism

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival is non-commercial, with most events free to attend, and runs with support from Vinnytsia City Council and international cultural institutes including the Polish Institute in Kyiv, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, the Czech Centre in Kyiv, and the Consulate General of Poland in Vinnytsia
