Bristol International Balloon Fiesta in Bristol

Up to a hundred hot air balloons launch together at dawn and dusk from Ashton Court during Bristol's four-day August fiesta, running since 1979. Night glow evenings, when tethered balloons light up to music before a fireworks display, draw crowds even on days when wind grounds the main mass ascents.

Bristol's ballooning tradition predates the fiesta itself by two centuries, building on eighteenth-century flights in and around the city, and the modern festival launched in 1979 as a way of showcasing that local heritage on a larger scale.
